Founder Richard Smith has been repairing musical instruments since 1975. Starting out in a small workshop in the North of England, the business made their way down the country to Bristol, where Studio 7 have been for 28 years, settling in Centrespace and latterly opening a workshop in St Nicholas Market in Bristol, where the team has been since 2017, doubling the size of the workshop in 2023.
Specialising in wind instruments, they are one of the few workshops in the UK that people can actually visit and walk past, watching the repairers as they work. Over the years, they’ve seen a number of talented repairers enter through the doors, and have trained many more. Since 2018 the team has grown with new technicians, and now numbers five people with specialities including oboes, bassoons, clarinets, saxophones and flutes to cornets, trumpets, trombones, baritones and tubas. The workshop has seen many different forms in its lifetime and is constantly growing to be the best that it can be. They’ve formed partnerships with surrounding schools and youth music services to promote music amongst the younger generation and encourage more young people to learn to play instruments – potentially even creating the next generation of instrument repairers.
